Venom was born in a community of extraterrestrial symbiotes. They survived by possessing the bodies of other life-forms. The parasites would provide their victims with enhanced physical abilities at the cost of fatally draining them of adrenaline. According to The Planet of the Symbiote storyline, the Venom symbiote was considered insane by its own race after it was discovered that it desired to commit to its host rather than use it up. As a punishment, the symbiote was imprisoned on Battleworld.
In Secret Wars Issue 7, Spider-man damages his costume in combat on Battleworld. He is addressed to a place that can provide him with an alternative. Before having a chance to get a new suit, Spider-man stumbles into the prison where the symbiote has been trapped. Spider-man unknowingly releases Venom out of the cage in the form of Liquid. Spider-man’s spider-sense initially tingles and then stops upon Spider-man’s first contact with the fluid. It covers his body and reacting to Spider-man’s thoughts a new costume and symbol are formed for Spider-man. To spider-man surprise, the suit was able to mimic street clothes and provide a seemingly endless stronger supply of webbing.
Soon after when Spider-man gets back to Earth he decides to keep the black suit and wear regularly. He soon realises with the help of Reed Richards that the suit is an alien symbiote that wants to fuse permanently with him. Try desperately to get rid of Venom, Spider-man crashes himself into a church bell tower. As the bells ring to sound the hour, the symbiote is weakened by the sound and attack itself from Peter’s body.
In the act of sympathy, however, this symbiote uses its remaining strength to carry unconscious Peter to safety. Spider-man believed the symbiote to be dead and alternately began wearing a homemade version of the black suit in conjunction with his original.
Spider-man’s rejection of the symbiote would later leave Venom bitter and wanting to kill him a trait is shared with its future host Eddie Brock.
Eddie was a reporter for The Daily Globe before it comes to light that he had prevaricated a story exposing the true identity of the Sin Eater. Shortly after the story was published, Spider-man catches the real Sin-Eater, which leads to disgracing Brock as a news reporter and costing him his job and then his wife. Spider-man cost Eddie Brock his entire life.
Now writing for cheap gossip magazines, Brock has bitter hate for Spider-man which only escalates when it’s revealed that Brock has cancer. In response to this news, Brock begins working out bringing his body to levels of Dwayne the Rock Johnson.
Finding it difficult to live, Brock considers suicide and hence pays his last visit to church for forgiveness.
Meanwhile, after leaving Spider-man’s body, the symbiote finds itself physically attracted to Brock. And in this way, Eddie Brock venom was born.
He made his first appearance in the very last panel of the Amazing Spiderman issue 299 but shown in Issue 298 of The Amazing Spider-man. The idea of venom came from Randy Schuler a regular reader and was bought by Marvel for $220 under the direction of the then editor-in-chief Jim Shooter.
Now even though Eddie Brock is the most popular Venom, there have been several different people who were possessed by Venom. But we are just going to mention two of the most notable ones besides Eddie Brock. The first one being Mac Gargan aka Scorpion. Then Venom bumped into Mac Gargan and advanced him additional powers. He agreed and became the next host of the Venom symbiote which he hoped would give him the advantage he needed for defeating Spider-man. As well as securing a place as a part of the Sinister 12. However, Spider-man still defeated him somehow.
We have the second most recent Venom, Flash Thompson. In the Siege of Asgard, Venom gets separated from Mac Gargan.
Later, the US government gets possession of symbiote and is stored in a secret government facility. The government was planning to create a super soldier with the help of symbiote. After trying and failing multiple times, the government decides to reach out to a special candidate. Flash Thompson was approached by the Department of Homeland Security as a candidate to be bonded with the alien to create a new super soldier. Flash agreed and became Agent Venom controlling the suit with a combination of sedatives and strength of will.
While once again praying at a church, Brock was discovered by Martin Lee who was secretly Mr Negative. Lee gives Brock a job at his soup kitchen. Eddie began life as a cook and continued rounds of chemotherapy in order to try to combat his cancer.
While working for Martin Lee aka Mr Negative, a touch from him charged the remnants of the Venom symbiote within his body. The remnants started bonding with his body’s white cells. A brand new symbiote was born inside Eddie.
One day Mac Gargan who was the current Venom was hunting Spider-man, but since a former host and presuming it to be Spider-man followed the inkling. He then encounters Brock instead of Spider-man the Venom symbiote then attempts to leave Matt Gargons and rebounds with Brock.
However, upon making contact with Brock’s skin, the new symbiote began to react. A white substance seeps out of his pores, and the Venom symbiote is immediately repelled. Once the symbiote completely covers his body and transforms his appearance, Brock declares himself as Anti-venom.
It’s not possible to write this article without mentioning Venom’s offspring, Carnage. Let’s not get into detail about him as it will need an entire post to explain him. But in short, Carnage is the child of Venom. You might be thinking ‘Venom might have had sex with another symbiote’ well that’s not the case. Symbiotes reproduce asexually once per generation. Once born, Carnage bonded with a crazy serial killer Cletus Kasady. Thus, creating one of spider-man’s most murderous, brutal and lethal villains. Adding to that, we also have Toxin, who is the son of Carnage and the grandson of Venom. Making Venom a Grandfather.
I am planning to make more “STORY OF…” posts. Please let me know in the comments down below which superhero or supervillain you want me to post about next.
I remember in the end credits of Venom, we see Cletus Kasady! Can’t wait and thank you Comicnity for this!
