Who Are the Russo Brothers?

The Russo Brothers are two American brothers, Anthony and Joe Russo, that produce, direct and screenwrite movies. They are also known as the people who directed most Marvel movies to date. Their works include Captain America: First Avenger, Captian America: Winter Soldier, and Avengers: Endgame amongst many other popular movies.

Early Career of the Russo Brothers

Anthony and Joe Russo are the children of a popular Italian American judge. Anthony was born in February 1970 while his brother was born in July of the following year. Both brothers grew up in Cleveland, Ohio.

After graduating from the Benedictine High School, Joe studied law while his brother took up acting classes at the Case Western Reserve University. However, both brothers changed careers and decided to make their first movie, Pieces.

The movie was a success at a film festival for emerging artists. Besides, the movie made the Rosso Brothers partner with Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney. Under this partnership, the team create a crime comedy film, Welcome to Collinwood.

After Welcome to Collinwood, the Rosso Brothers worked on the pilot of two TV shows – Lucky and Arrested Development. In 2004, the brothers won an award for the “Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series”. 

You, Me, and Dupree

Before becoming the team who directed the most marvel movies, the Russo brothers directed You, Me, and Dupree. Although the movie was poorly rated by audiences, it had a $130 million worldwide grossing thereby making it a hit at the box office.

Other TV Shows

By 2007 – 2008, The Russo Brothers returned to TV shows and handled several projects. Such shows included Carpool, Community, and Happy Endings.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

In 2012, the Russo Brothers were signed to create their first Marvel movie, Captain America  – The  Winter Soldier. Here, the brothers worked with movie stars such as Scarlet Johansson and Samuel L Jackson. After the release of the movie, it became one of the highest-grossing films of 2014. It also had impressive reviews from critics across the world.

Captain America: Civil War

In 2014, Anthony and Joe Russo stated working on Captain America: Civil War. After its release in 2016, the Captain America sequel earned more than 1.1 billion dollars. Because of these profits, Captain America: Civil War was hailed as one of the highest-grossing movies in history. 

Avengers: Infinity War

By now, movie fans saw the Russo brothers as the directors that directed the most Marvel movies. In 2015, they supervised the making of another Marvel superhero movie known as Avengers: Infinity War. Apart from coming as one of the most expensive movies ever made, Avengers: Infinity War is remembered as one of the highest-grossing movies of all time. It even won several awards because of its high level of visual effects.

Avengers: Endgame

This movie is also seen as one of the best works from the Russo brothers. It is also their final Marvel superhero movie. After its release in 2019, Avengers: Endgame stood out as one of the top-grossing movies of all time. 

21 Bridges 

In 2019, the Russo brothers produced an action movie, 21 Bridges. Here, they worked with Chad Boseman who was a major actor on the Avenger franchise.

Relic

By 2020, the brothers were involved in the making of this Australian horror movie. Here, their production company – AGBO handled finance and sales. 

Extraction and Mosul

After gaining popularity as the people who directed the most Marvel movies, they produced Extraction in 2020. Also, Joe Russo wrote the movie and worked on the screenplay of the action movie. 

The brothers also worked on another action movie – Mosul

Acting Career

Even if Joe switched from acting to directing, he has played minor roles in their TV shows, the Captain America franchise, and the Avengers. He also acted as a voice-over on the Simpsons.

Awards

Asides from becoming a team who produced the most Marvel movies, the Russo Brothers have earned various awards for their work.
